Pine Double Screen Board For 10 Frame Hive What is it? A double screen board allows you to run a 2-queen hive. The double screen isolates the bees that above the screen from the bees that are below the screen, while still allowing heat to circulate through the hive. By manipulating the three different double entrances, one can add or subtract bees from the top or bottom or run a split on top of a parent colony. The double screen board has many uses such as: Splits and queen rearing. Place board above the old colony that has the queen and below the split. Returning foragers will remain with the old colony leaving the young bees and eggs in the top box making the conditions perfect for making queen cells. Re-queening. When you have a strong hive that needs re-queening proceed just like making a split but remove the old queen and put the new queen cage in the top box. Nurse bees will accept a new queen much easier than older foraging bees. Combining queenright with queen less colony. The scent of the queen can circulate throughout the boxes to allow them to adjust to the new scent before the they are merged. Over wintering a weak hive. The weak hive gains the benefit of the warmth from the hive below, but the hives remain separate. It improves the chances of winter survival for a weak hive that might have trouble keeping warm. Moving Hives. When moving bees in hot weather, using screws, fasten the double-screen board to the top of the hive in place of a solid cover. The screen provides extra ventilation to bees that have limited ways to keep the hive cool. How is our board constructed? Rough cut yellow pine is planed down to a perfect ¾” thicknes 12 gauge 1/8” galvanized steel mesh for the screen 2″ coated rust resistant bronze wood screws and Titebond wood glue are used to attach the frame to the base (14 screws in total) The toggles are attached to the frame with 1” stainless steel screws. The double screen board comes fully assembled. Pine is the most popular wood for making bee hives. My wooden ware is made by “me” to exacting specifications in my state-of-the-art workshop.
