Cover Crops for the Fall Garden

Oats die on their own over winter and rye does not. For a home garden with hand tools, that difference matters more than anything else on the seed rack.

Sow oats. If this is your first cover crop and you garden with a fork and a rake, oats are the answer, and the reason is that they die on their own.

Oats winterkill in Hardiness Zone 6 and colder and through much of Zone 7, according to SARE. NRCS puts the cold tolerance at 25°F. You sow in late August, they grow eight or ten weeks, a hard freeze kills them, and in spring you have brittle residue that breaks up under a rake and rots fast. Maryland Extension says you can plant straight into it. No mowing in April mud, no tiller, no regrowth.

That is the whole argument, and it is a bigger deal than it sounds, because the standard cover crop advice points somewhere else entirely.

Rye is better soil and worse work

Cereal rye does more. It germinates at soil temperatures down to 34°F, survives to −30°F, produces 3,000 to 4,000 pounds of biomass per acre in the Northeast, and scavenges 25 to 50 pounds of nitrogen that would otherwise leach out over winter. It suppresses weeds chemically as well as physically, and SARE cites trials measuring 78% and 99% weed reduction.

Then April comes and you have to kill it. SARE says rye under 12 inches is difficult to kill by tillage, and that tilling it above 12 inches usually eliminates regrowth. Illinois Extension’s garden method is to mow or string-trim it to the soil about two weeks before you want to transplant, let the residue dry a day or two, then till 3 to 4 inches deep to kill the roots. That is real work with hand tools, at the busiest week of the year, on ground you cannot plant until it is done.

The allelopathy that suppresses pigweed also suppresses your carrots. SARE says the effect tapers after about 30 days and hits small-seeded crops hardest, and that transplants are less affected. UConn says removing rye two weeks before planting helps. Neither gives a crop-specific waiting period, so if you are direct-seeding carrots or onions behind rye, leave more room than you think you need.

What rye does not do

It does not add nitrogen. Rye is a grass. SARE describes it as scavenging nitrogen already in the soil, not fixing new nitrogen, and NRCS warns about the opposite problem.

Residue above about 30:1 carbon to nitrogen ties nitrogen up rather than releasing it, per NC State. Rye runs 26:1 while vegetative, 37:1 at flowering, and 82:1 once it goes to straw. Let rye get tall and you have handed your soil microbes a pile of carbon they will pull nitrogen out of the soil to digest, right when your tomatoes want it. Terminate earlier, in the vegetative stage, and less gets immobilized.

Legumes, and the vetch problem

Hairy vetch fixes real nitrogen. Vetch and rye together contributed an estimated 130 to 180 pounds per acre in Maryland trials, and UMass says vetch alone has supplied over 100 pounds when left long enough. It is hardy through Zone 4, into Zone 3 with snow.

It also comes back. SARE reports that 10 to 20% of vetch seed is hard seed that sits ungerminated in the soil for a season or more, and says outright it “can cause a weed problem.” NRCS repeats the warning independently. Plant vetch in a small garden and you may be pulling it for years. That is a fair trade on a field. In a 20-by-30 bed it is a decision, not a freebie.

Crimson clover is the gentler legume, fixing 70 to 150 pounds of nitrogen per acre by both SARE’s and Ohio State’s numbers. It overwinters reliably in Zone 8 and into the lower reaches of Zone 6, and dies in Zone 5 and colder, which for a northern gardener makes it another winterkilled option rather than a spring problem.

Whichever legume you pick, get the right inoculant. NRCS is explicit that vetch and field pea need Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viceae while clovers need bv. trifolii, and that these are not interchangeable. A clover inoculant will not nodulate vetch. Plant inoculated seed within 24 hours of mixing.

How much seed, and when

The garden rates disagree by a factor of two and you should know that going in. Illinois Extension says 4 to 5 pounds of cereal rye per 1,000 square feet. Maryland says 3 to 4 ounces per 100 square feet, which works out to under 2.5 pounds per 1,000. SARE’s broadcast field rate of 90 to 160 pounds per acre falls between them. Anywhere in that range gives a stand. The lower end costs less and the higher end covers sloppy broadcasting.

Maryland’s window for fall garden cover crops is August 15 to October 1. Clemson gives the rule generically: non-legumes 4 to 6 weeks before a killing frost, legumes 6 to 8 weeks, because the legume needs longer to get established and start fixing anything. Oats specifically want 40 to 60 days before frost, and SARE found that two weeks late cut spring weed suppression from 39% to 10%.

If you mix species, Maryland says cut each one to about 60% of its solo rate.

Next spring

Whatever survives the winter needs killing, and then it needs time. Minnesota says three weeks for vegetable growers between terminating an overwintered cover and planting. Clemson says two to three. Colorado says two weeks minimum and a month for fall-planted covers, on the grounds that decomposing material pulls oxygen out of the soil.

Two to four weeks, then. Which means the real cost of a cover crop is not the seed. It is a bed you cannot plant for the first month of the season, and that is the number to run before you order anything.
