Hens stop laying in the fall because the days get shorter and their feathers wear out, and there is nothing to fix. Oregon State University Extension ties the trigger to day length: to hold production, birds need more than 12 hours of light, with 14 to 16 hours being typical. As autumn takes the day below that line, a hen that has been laying for a year drops the whole set of feathers and rebuilds it. University of Florida IFAS puts a good laying run at 50 to 60 weeks before that rest period arrives.
Feathers are protein. Oregon State describes the tradeoff without hedging: the hen puts the bulk of her energy into growing feathers, leaving little for eggs. Mississippi State University Extension says most hens stop producing entirely until the molt finishes.
The ragged hens are the good ones
This is the part that surprises people. Mississippi State separates birds into late molters and early molters, and the split predicts productivity in the opposite direction from how it looks.
Late molters lay for 12 to 14 months before molting, shed their feathers in 2 to 3 months, and look terrible doing it. Their feathers go tattered, and they drop primary feathers in groups of two or more. Mississippi State calls them the better laying hens. Early molters start after only a few months of production, take 4 to 6 months to finish, lose feathers one at a time, and keep a smoother appearance throughout. Those are the poorer layers. Oklahoma State Extension reports the same two ranges independently.
So a hen that looks like she lost a fight in October is the one earning her feed. The tidy one next to her is not.
How long it takes depends on who you ask
The published ranges do not line up. Penn State Extension says 10 to 12 weeks to complete a molt and come back into production. University of Kentucky says commercial strains can be through a molt in four to six weeks, while heritage birds sometimes take three to four months. Mississippi State’s 2 to 3 months and 4 to 6 months are keyed to the early or late split rather than to breed. UNH Extension says about six weeks for the new feathers to grow in.
Part of that spread is strain and part of it is definition. NC State’s figure for a managed commercial molt, 14 to 17 days totally out of production, measures days without eggs. That is not the same thing as days of feather regrowth, and the two numbers get quoted as if they were.
Bare patches are not a molt
This is the most useful diagnostic in the whole subject, and Oregon State states it in one line. Molt does not result in localized feather loss or bare spots. When bare spots appear, they are almost always the result of picking.
Location narrows it further. Mississippi State says feathers missing from the abdominal and vent area point to external parasites such as northern fowl mite or poultry lice. Feathers gone from the back and head of a hen, in a flock with a rooster, is usually mating damage, and Mississippi State notes it grows back after breeding season.
There is also a production tell. UF IFAS reports that egg production in mite-infested flocks may drop as much as 10 percent, and as much as 20 percent under heavy infestation. A partial drop with bare patches reads differently from a full stop with feathers coming off everywhere at once. Molting also runs head first, then neck, breast, body, wings, and tail, in that order, per Mississippi State.
One more filter from University of Arizona Cooperative Extension: pullets hatched in spring or summer will not molt in their first autumn. A young bird losing feathers this fall is worth a look at parasites or pecking rather than a shrug.
The protein advice that has no source behind it
Feeding cat food, tuna, or piles of mealworms to molting hens is standard backyard advice. No extension service or USDA source found mentions pet food for chickens at all, in either direction. It is unsupported rather than refuted, which is a different thing, but the underlying logic runs against it.
Mississippi State identifies methionine, not crude protein generally, as the nutrient that limits feather growth, since sulfur is a major constituent of feathers. The same page states that adding grains such as corn alongside a complete feed can push methionine intake too low. Diluting a formulated ration with treats works against the goal. University of Georgia Extension puts the methionine target at roughly 2 percent of the crude protein value, around 0.35 to 0.50 percent of the diet.
Crude protein recommendations for layers themselves range from 14 percent at eXtension to 16 percent at Penn State to 16 to 18 percent at Georgia and Utah State. No source found gives a specific crude protein figure for backyard hens in molt. The commercial molt diets published by Kentucky and NC State run the other way on purpose, at 9.92 to 11.75 percent protein, because their job is to induce the molt rather than shorten it.
The practical version: keep the complete feed in front of them and cap the extras. eXtension caps all supplementation at what birds finish in 20 minutes, fed in the afternoon after they have eaten their feed. University of Maryland Extension puts scratch grain at about 10 percent of daily intake.
Skip the extra oyster shell
Loading a molting hen with calcium is common and points the wrong direction. A hen that is not laying does not have the calcium demand of one that is. UF IFAS notes the requirement rises at least fourfold only when the first eggs arrive. Managed molt diets cut calcium deliberately, to about 1.0 percent at Kentucky and 1.33 percent at NC State, against the 2.5 to 4 percent in layer feed.
The risk is not theoretical. eXtension links high-calcium diets fed to non-laying birds to kidney damage, and University of Georgia notes leg abnormalities and death in young meat birds fed layer-level calcium. Free-choice oyster shell on the side lets the birds that are still laying take what they need without forcing it on the ones that are not.
Lights during a molt
Here the extension services genuinely disagree, and a reader following one will act against the other. UNH says supplemental light will interfere with the birds’ natural need and cycle of molting, and withholds it. Oregon State goes further and recommends inducing the rest by turning the lights off for about six weeks during the second winter. Oklahoma State states the opposite operating rule: never decrease the lighting period on birds in production, or they will stop laying.
Both positions make sense once you see what each is protecting. Oklahoma State is preventing an unwanted production stop. UNH and Oregon State are permitting a wanted one. The question a keeper actually has to answer is whether eggs this winter are worth more than a rested bird next spring, and that depends on the flock, not on the research.
If lights do go on, Penn State’s ceiling is 16 hours a day, never more. UF IFAS says intensity should be enough to read newsprint at bird level.
What comes back
Fewer eggs, larger ones. eXtension states that each year the level of production is lower while egg size increases. NC State’s commercial figures across two cycles are steeper than most backyard keepers expect: 85.0 percent production and 300.7 eggs in the first cycle against 78.5 percent and 172.3 eggs in the second. Those are commercial numbers on commercial birds and should not be read as a backyard forecast, but the direction holds. Oregon State says hens produce well until two or three years old and then decline.
A hen going through her first real molt this October is roughly a year and a half old and has another few productive years in her. The eggs will be back around the turn of the year, and there will be fewer of them than last spring.
